Who was the first president of the United States?
By maurizio | March 24, 2007
Washington? Wroong. Well. Right and Wrong.
I was reading this article which says that George Washington was not the first president. So I immediately googled for “first president” and as first link I found a page on whitehouse.gov that stated that he was the first president. So who lied? I usually doesn’t trust what comes out from the White House, so I googled again. It turns out that, as usual, wikipedia helped me. George Washington was the first president of the United States with the new Constitution, which is the same used today. The title “President of United States” was used even before to design the “President of the United States, in Congress Assembled”. So if we are really picky (or we participate to some quiz show) we could answer either yes or no to the title’s question and still be right.

The title of this article is “Who was the first president of the United States?”
“Who was the first president of the United States?”
Yes.
Does that mean I got the question right?

Thought the same thing as above, this is stupid unless you tell us who was the first president otherwise. You cannot say George Washington was not the first president but there was no one before him.

I believe the first President of an independent US was John Hanson…though I could be wrong.
