Digg Vs StumbleUpon: better free traffic

    By maurizio | May 29, 2007

I am testing both sites to see which one is more useful to get readers and I’ve noticed a few things.
First, if you just want to see some more readers use StumbleUpon. The spike of traffic is immediate and you don’t have to wait to be on the homepage like on Digg. The only downside is that you don’t get as much reader as when you get on Digg’s homepage.

People clicking on StumbleUpon button better represents Internet audience rather than Digg’s ones which are mostly Geeks or at least understand Computers more than StumbleUpon’s ones. This is good if you want to have a bigger audience. The biggest problem is that people easily jump from a site to another just by clicking on a button. You can easily skip a site just because you clicked too much or the site was just a bit too slow for your tastes. Digg users instead, they have to read a title and a description; if they like it they click to read the story. Digg’s user are more prone to read your content (“more interested”).
If you are looking for traffic that gives you money you should probably bet on..both. Digg users (if they come to your site) are more interested, but they click less ads; StumbleUpon users instead could be less interested buy maybe they could click more ads.

    StumbleUpon

    • Easy to get some traffic
    • Broad Audience (not only IT)
    • “Less interested”
    • Less users (~2,500,000)

    Digg

    • Difficult to get more than 10-20visits
    • Almost only IT audience
    • “More interested”
    • More users

I’ll try to get some more stats sooner or later..just stumble/digg this story so I’ll have more data. :-)

      Great job, Maurizio.

And you’ve been Stumbled and Dugg!

Hmm…wonder how I’d write that in Italian?

      Thanks Paula.
Only 6 digg though. Maybe I should have written more , with images and stuff :-)
Don’t ask me to translate that. When you have two Names like that usually it’s not translated.
(…E) sei stato Stumblato e Duggato!
I’m not sure how you write that in French and German though.. I think “Stumbliert” and “geDuggt” in German. “geStumblert” sounds soo wrong :-)
French usually create new words for every foreign word. See “Ordinateur” and “octets” for computer and bytes. :-)

Yes, nice once. So there should be a third solution to take the best from each one, right?

      Stumbled and Dugg.
