Firefox: Find your bookmark
By maurizio | June 9, 2007
Sometimes, especially with the older version of Firefox, it happens that you loose all your settings (bookmarks, buttons position, etc.) or worse it doesn’t start anymore.
If this happened to you, don’t panic. Firefox for some weird reason hasn’t recognized your settings so it started a new user with new settings.
If you are worried only for your bookmark, the easiest way to get your bookmark back is to browse your C: directory to
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
where USERNAME is your..username.
There you will see at least two directories with strange names. Enter on the first one. You will see a file called bookmark.html. Note how big it is. Now go back and enter on the second directory and note how big the bookmark.html file is. The smallest one is the new (and empty) bookmark, while the big one is your old bookmark. Now to restore your bookmark you just have to copy the big bookmark.html over the small bookmark.html (to be sure, make a copy of the small one first or rename it)
This is the quick and dirty way to save your bookmark.
If you want to save all your settings try to start the profile manager. To start it you need to go to a Dos prompt and type
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” -profilemanager
From here you should be able to go back to your old profile.
If you are working on Mac OS X or Linux, you should use the same tricks. Just note that the bookmark should be located on your home directory, probably under “.Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles”
