    Generate traffic with StumbleUpon: tips

    By maurizio | June 21, 2007

If you want to get more readers, StumbleUpon is the best way to get them. What should you write to get the most traffic?
The best thing to do is to write what you know best. Maybe you will not have tons of traffic, but the few people who read your posts will surely be happier. If you just write random thought (like I do sometimes) you will not make people happy and the traffic spike will disappear the next day.
There are some categories that gives you more readers. For example, yesterday two posts have been stumbled:
Get info about your users in PHP and Funny Haiku. The first one got 136 hits, while the second one just 36. As you probably imagine, the first one was tagged “Programming”, while the Funny Haiku was under “Humour”.

Conclusion: If you want to get more users from StumbleUpon, you should write for Technological Tags.

Well. That’s not a great conclusion..I just sampled 2 categories, but I’m sure you can agree on that; think about who’s the typical StumbleUpon user..

On a side note, I noticed that my Who was the first president of USA post that got stumbled months ago, is coming back. I already wrote a bit about it on my Analytics Top 10 tool update.

Feel free to stumble this one too.

      Hi Maurizio,
Thanks for dropping by, I replied with a couple of questions. Also I find that with stumbleupon people tend to ‘zap’ so you get a lot of visitors but the average time they stay is around 10 seconds! I know because that’s what I do myself. Still I will give it another go.

Hey Vic, check my other post “Digg Vs Stumbleupon”. I speak about it. Digg has more high quality readers. If they come to your site is because they want to read it. Stumblers just stumble :-)

      Hi again Maurizio,

I re-installed SU but am wondering if you are allowed to vote for your own site or your own posts? I have done it a couple of times but it doesn’t seem to work or make any difference.

On another point – I am now considering doing posts about various people (mainly beginners) who are on Paula’s list – would you be interested in me doing a short post about your blog? I would be particulary interested to know if you have noticed any change since Paula Mooney published her list. I did a short post about Courtney Tuttle – here – http://www.netmonetization.com/2007/06/knowledge-is-weightless.html (I don’t think he knows yet). There wouldn’t be any charge of course but it would be useful if you could link to my site if you agree. Let me know what you think. Regards, Vic

I haven’t checked SU rules, but someone told me that you can’t be the first to post your own site. I think you can vote them though.

About the post, feel free to do it. You can contact me if you need some more info.
