I was wandering around offers and I saw that NationsFinance is asking me to write about my credit card experiences. Well, I do have something to say.

As some of you already know (by reading my “About” page), I live in Switzerland, country known for chocolate, cheese and banks. I don’t want to speak about bank’s behavior but I’d like to say something about swiss behavior with money. Swiss used to use money wisely. Maybe you think that you can do whatever you want with money if you live in Switzerland because you are rich. This is simply wrong. Swiss citizens are not rich. Switzerland is very expensive. Maybe a farmer in Switzerland earn a lot of money compared to a chinese banker, but he has to pay a lot more than the chinese guy. If the banker could work in Switzerland (with swiss salary) and teleport to China to live and pay taxes there, he’ll probably be one of the richest guy there.
What swiss knows probably better than someone else is that you can’t spend more than what you have. That’s why Credit Cards are not so accepted in Switzerland. We don’t need to get money lent; better wait next month to buy what we wanted to buy, rather than take debts. That’s was true 10 years ago. Now swiss are starting to use Credit Cards more and more because we are in someway changing.

I wanted to have my credit card too; not because I wanted to buy some expensive computer but simply because I wanted to use it on Internet. Guess what ? I can’t have it. The dumb excuse is that I don’t have a job so they can’t be sure I’ll be able to pay at the end of the month. I have enough money to cover their maximum monthly rate, but that’s not enough for them; they don’t trust me.
That’s really bad, but when I’ll get a job one of the first thing I’ll do is to get a credit card. If I find a job in England I’ll probably consult more NationsFinance because I saw there are interesting pages to Compare credit cards and Balance transfers comparisons. They show 0% credit cards, but I’m not interested because I don’t like debts. I prefer to pay fully every month.
Today you can’t really survive on internet without a Credit Card.

Sorry Maurizio. I did like your post, but I don’t agree with you. I think that it’s possible to survive on Internet without a Credit Card. If not there in the Europe, here in the Brazil it’s possible.

Interesting observation. How do you buy stuff from websites? If they don’t have Paypal you can’t do much. Maybe Brazilian sites use some different method?

      Ciao, Maurizio–
Nice of you to stop by–
I never had a steady job or credit, but I had a US Gov’t Bond as my first investment & some savings I deposited together into a ‘Financial Management’ account, my first I think it was Dean Witter back in ‘88 (I was 34 already!): this included a ‘credit’ card which was actually debit: they paid at the end of every month from my money market account, which also had checks– maybe that would be a possibility, if you can put some or all of your savings into such an account?

I asked to my bank and they want me to pay around 80$/yr just to create some kind of fake deposit of around 2-3000$ so they are sure I will not spend that money. Add that I have to spend 40$/yr for the card… There are some other companies that offer free credit cards but they want me to have a job (I soo would love to have one..)

Thanks goldcoaster. I wasn’t sure to put it there because I’m afraid that some people will simply skip it. I don’t like that, especially when the post is interesting (IMHO) and not just a sales pitch.
